Interactive multimedia based instruction (MPI)


Multimedia is one word that really is not easy to define. The experts consider that the word “multimedia” is actually a form of goods not in fact take shape. It has to be listened to various constraints the notion of multimedia provided by many experts in the field.

In the early nineties, the implementation of Computer Based Intruction more emphasis on the Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI). At that time, the development of CAI was applied using a universal computer programming languages such as Basic, Turbo Basic, Pascal, Turbo Pascal etc. With the limitations of the programming language used at that time, the product less attractive CAI student learning as more elements to exploit the limited media, ie text and graphics. CAI course development model has become the basic reference in the development of MPI programs.

In harmony with the development of computer technology, both hardware and software, personal computer today has been able to integrate text, graphics, sound, video or animation in a program. In the ’60s era, multimedia learning in the taxonomy of educational technology is defined as a collection / mix of different media devices that are used for presentations (Barker and Tucker, 1990). But in the ’90s, the concept of an integrated multimedia more than one media, text, graphics, sound, video and animation, in which students can control the delivery of elements of diverse media (D’Aloisio, 1998). According Gayestik (1992) as a multimedia computer-based interactive communication system capable of creating, storing, presenting and accessing the information in the form of texts, graphics, sound, video or animation. With current computer technology has made it possible to store, process and restated the source of the sound and video in digital format.

From the above studies can be understood explicitly that the development of instructional media that simultaneously capable of displaying text, images, graphics, sound, video or animation is called interactive multimedia learning.
